A friend has a 55-200VR DX lens and he offered it to me for almost nothing, I have a couple DX bodies but none of them sees any use since I mostly use a D8x0 or a Z6II, dunno if to take it or not, supposed to be pristine but should he ask me something as a trade I won't really know, any feedback appreciated. There were two versions. According to Thom Hogan the first one is fine on 16MP sensors but isn't so good on 24MP sensors. The second one is sharper and was developed specifically because DX sensors were increasing in resolution. Reports of sharp vs. not sharp may be sample variation or may be version I vs. version II. I bought the VR-II version new for $120 when Nikon was clearing them out at $200 off. I've used it for perhaps a couple of dozen shots on my IR-converted D200 and D7200, plus for a couple of shots on a V2. In that limited use, I found it to be acceptably sharp: That vignetting looks pretty ugly, but take a look at the EXIF data. This is on an D800 with DX crop turned off. On a DX camera the falloff would be minimal. The VR-II version collapses to a small package (about the size of my 18-70mm). It has a plastic lens mount, and based on that alone people will call it "garbage" or "junk." IMO, it's a competent consumer-grade lens, but IMO for more modern dSLRs, the 70-300mm VR AF-P is a better choice. -- hide signature -- Light travels at 2.13085531 × 10^14 smoots per fortnight. I picked one up cheap and quite enjoyed shooting it on my D70. It was a nice compact size and perfectly sharp on the lower res sensor. It was a refreshing change from the bulky 70-300mm I'd been using. That said, I sold it because I didn't need both. I have the newer VR II version of this lens which I use with the D7100. It's acceptably sharp, considering that its main attractive features are its size and light weight. It's a nice lens for walkabout photography or for shooting in crowds at outdoor events. I also have a Tamron 70 - 300mm f/4 - f/5.6 full frame lens, which provides superior image sharpness, but is too large and heavy to be carried about for the types of photography that I mentioned.
