Good quality all around, the only problem I've experienced with the printer so far is the print does seem skewed ever-so-slightly... I notice the introductory toner cartridge has a bit of wiggle room on one side and sits angled in the same way that the printing is skewed, so maybe that's why. It is a very slight skew, I only noticed it because a page I was printing had a border. Edit: The skewed printing has corrected itself over time.

People have pointed out that it doesn't work with Linux. It does work with Linux, but with a newer version of HPLIP than is provided for Ubuntu 18.04.1. You can download an up-to-date HPLIP from HP's website. This will get you printing.

For scanning, you need a proprietary HPLIP plugin. The automatic plugin installation through hp-plugin kept failing for me, but to work around this you can let the script download the plugin, and before it attempts the install, grab the downloaded *.run file out of your ~/.hplip folder (make sure you copy/move it before exiting hp-plugin, so that it doesn't delete it). Then chmod +x and execute the .run file. You should now be able to scan, through both the flatbed and ADF.

This certainly is a great deal more trouble to get it working than you would expect, but it does work well once you get it working. HP does currently list the M130fn as fully supported WITHOUT needing a driver plugin, so hopefully the situation will improve with future releases.

When I downloaded HP's print drivers, in order to get the printer to work, I had to agree that Hewlett Packard could store a copy of everything I scanned or printed on the printer. That is an invasion of privacy. A warrantless search. The printer won't work unless you agree they can snoop on you. It is none of Hewlett Packard's business what I scan or print. I'm mad. All in all - it's a good printer if you can get it to work properly. As a LaserJet printer you'll be able to get a lot of print volume out of this device at a cost per page that is a LOT cheaper than a LaserJet printer. The MFP qualities allow you to scan and make copies as needed, and scanning is always a plus. One of the best features about this device is that it has an RJ45 jack for a network cable - which surprisingly, many LaserJet printers at this price point DO NOT have, and only have wireless capabilities. While that may seem great as a wireless printer and all, wireless devices are prone to have numerous connectivity issues, and even as an IT professional, it gets annoying for ME to troubleshoot, and to someone with much less IT knowledge, it would drive them up the wall.

I have had some connectivity issues with the device, even when everything is networked and set up properly. A power cycle usually resolves the issue. It usually takes some tinkering to get the device to work for print jobs.

The bottom line with this printer - it does work, and it gets the job done. I use it as a networked printer and couldn't tell you its expertise as a USB printer. But as a network printer, it gives a lot of members of my family headaches to use, and I use my knowledge as an IT professional to get it working, often. For most people, troubleshooting this device constantly is going to make them hate it.

I didn't read the description carefully and it wasn't wireless so I canceled the order. Careless of me.

Does NOT support *built-in* "Scan to email" or "Scan to network folder". You MUST use a PC and HP software to do these operations. The M130fw (version with wi-fi and touch screen interface) DOES provide these functions *built-in*. Check 'Specification Sheet' for line item "Digital Sending Standard Features" M130fn='No' M130fw='Scan to email; Scan to network folder'. I didn't need Wi-Fi so bought the 'fn', only to discover after the fact that they didn't include the 'scan to' functions in that variant. Lack of built-in 'Scan to network folder' on 'fn' version makes no sense and could easily be accommodated on the non-touchscreen interface. Printing, Fax, and Copy functions work fine, however I kept unit only because of the extreme hassle of disassembly and repackaging in order to return it.

Not sure why so many complain. On Windows 10 just unpack, insert paper, turn on without USB cable attached to allow about 1 minute initiation (makes noises when toner is getting to developer), set up on 2 line panel what you want, plug in USB cable (don't turn off the printer!). Done. No need for any software, W10 supports this already. Any program supporting scanning can be used as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars An all-around good laser MPF that does the job

Reviewed in Canada on December 20, 2016

I think it is appropriate to start this review by saying that I got this printer at an incredible sale price of $100. I purchased two actually, one of them for a friend, and we both think it was an incredible investment. Would I have bought it at its regular MSRP? Probably not, there are plenty of options out there and this particular model lacks some features that I would have liked to have. However, at the price I got it, I can hardly complain. Keep in mind however that the rating I gave it (4 stars) is independent from the sale price.

Important notes:
- This is in response to the other reviewers: printers (most of them), are sold without Type A to Type B USB cables. I (like many other people) learned this the hard way long ago. So avoid the surprise and add a Type A to Type B cable with your order from Amazon (they're around 6 dollars). Don't go to Best buy or the likes of it where they will charge you at least 15 dollars. Obviously this is only if you plan on using your printer via USB.
- This model has no wireless capabilities AT ALL. The product description is INACCURATE. Before buying, I did some due diligence and learned it only connects to wired LAN. If you want to connect this to a network, you have to do it using Ethernet or share it using the computer it is connected to via USB (the other option is to have a Wi-Fi range extender with Ethernet ports, a Wi-Fi to Ethernet adapter or Powerline).

The good:
- If you have Windows 8 or more recent, set-up is straightforward. No need to use the disk. I set up mine on Ethernet and it got recognized instantly (as Fax, Printer and Scanner) by all computers (Windows 10, macOS Sierra). It was ready to use in 10 seconds.
- The web control interface (if set up on the Network directly) is great and very comprehensive. You can access it by typing the printer's local IP address.
- Printing quality is what you would expect from a standard Laser printer, ie it's good and you'll be satisfied.
- The tray-loader, in addition to the flatbed scanner, is great for scanning multiple pages at once (especially useful if the printer is not in the same room).

The bad:
- Drum and toner are separate consumables and this printer's toners are not noticeably cheaper as a result of this. You won't have to replace the drum until 12000 pages but it's something to keep in mind as it is unusual for a home laser printer.
- Scanner drivers that come with the printer are awful with Windows 10 (probably 8 too). They don't even work actually. The simplest workaround is to use Microsoft's drivers which bars you from using HP's acquisition software. It's not so bad since the software bundled with Windows is quite alright. Haven't tired Mac.
- Scanner resolution could have been better. 300 dpi is barely satisfactory.
- No way to initiate a scan directly from the printer. There has to be a remote action from a computer.
- Somewhat convoluted, bare-bones on-printer menu with no consumables gauge. The web interface more than makes up for this.

Final thoughts:
Again, for the price, I love this printer. It does its job with no more, no less than what I expect. At full price, I probably wouldn't have got it.

3.0 out of 5 stars It does the job; annoyed at my set up experience.

I bought it to replace an extremely frustrating poopy inkjet printer when it was a "deal of the day". It prints great by comparison, very fast (as was expected, being a laser printer and all).

Lowered rating for the following:
1) the installation CD application would not run, even when prompted manually. Had to go to the website to download the drivers and software.
2) it doesn't have WiFi capabilities (which I was aware of), but did NOT come with the USB cable required to connect it to your computer, it only comes with a dinky Ethernet cord. Since when do electronics come without the proper cords? My monitor for example came with 4 different cord options depending on how you wanted to connect it to your pc. So anyways, I had to run out and buy the cable for $30 from best buy.

P.S whenever I turn it on, the error light flashes for a good minute (making me panic), until it settles down and decides everything is a-okay. I thought it was faulty at first.

P.P.S. it shipped without an outer box, just came in its original HP packaging.

This is my first time purchasing a 3 in 1 (printer, scanner & fax ) compact machine. I am a true-blue HP consumer. This HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fn Monochrome Printer, Scanner and fax lives up to its name. A great machine that does everything - even being able to incorporate your android cellphone allowing you to print from your phone . I needed tech support from both HP and my internet service provider but in the end everything is working very well. Oh I'm working off of WIN 10 PRO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dried-out ink cartridges again?

Reviewed in Canada on August 1, 2018

Have a Canon all-in-one inkjet which produces lovely copy when the ink hasn't dried out. Got sick of buying outrageously expensive inkjet refills and finding them bone dry often when I attempted printing. Bought this laser and it's a thing of beauty. It can sit for weeks, get suddenly fired up and the copy is both quick and very crisp. No missing spots, no jaggies and I can inventory a replacement cartridge without worrying about it drying out from long storage. The only possible complaint is that the ink cartridges don't have the large capacity of some other printers, but for non-commercial use this is a reliable, economical printer which produces professional looking copy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent printer at a nice sale price.

Bought two - one for myself and one for a relative. He ran out of ink very quickly and was not impressed with the price of toner.

We keep it at our winter home in Florida. So far it has performed decently and only negative will be replacement toner cartridges.
