The dates of next year's bank holidays have been confirmed.

Bank holidays are a national public holiday and they are usually spread out across the calendar. They include seasonal events such as Christmas, Easter and the New Year.

Most shops shut, schools will close, places of business generally shut down and public transport is reduced on bank holidays. In England and Wales there are two bank holidays left this calendar year, those for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, meaning we get a 'substitute' day in the week instead. As Boxing Day, which is also a bank holiday, falls on a Monday it means the substitute Christmas bank holiday will be on Tuesday, December 27.

This is also the case for the first bank holiday of 2023, with Monday, January 2 being declared a substitute day for New Year's Day which also falls on a Sunday. Meanwhile, Easter is this year being celebrated in early April with, as is tradition, both Good Friday and Easter Monday, on April 7 and April 10 respectively, being bank holidays,

There will be three bank holidays in May 2023 - May 1, May 8 and May 29 to be exact. The extra May bank holiday, on Monday May 8, is to mark the coronation of King Charles III.

Downing Street confirmed the date of the holiday, which takes place two days after the crowning at Westminster Abbey on Saturday May 6. The announcement followed calls from Tory MPs for the government to either move the early May bank holiday from May 1 to coincide with the coronation weekend or to declare an extra day off.

There is another bank holiday in summer, on August 28, before next year's festive period.

The Prime Minister has proclaimed an additional bank holiday to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

The bank holiday will fall on Monday 8th May 2023, following the Coronation on Saturday 6th May 2023.

In line with the bank holiday to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953, this will be an opportunity for families and

communities across the country to come together to celebrate. The bank holiday will take place across the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak:

“The Coronation of a new monarch is a unique moment for our country. In recognition of this historic occasion, I am pleased to announce an additional bank holiday for the whole United Kingdom next year.”

“I look forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honour.”

Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Oliver Dowden:

“The Coronation combines the sacred and the solemn but it is also celebratory.”

“This bank holiday will once again give people across the United Kingdom the opportunity to come together as families and communities to welcome His Majesty to the throne as we mark this important day in our nation’s long history.”

Do Bank holidays have to be paid?

Bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave.

An employer can choose to include bank holidays as part of a worker’s statutory annual leave of 5.6 paid weeks (capped at 28 days annually).

Some employers may contractually provide additional bank holiday pay entitlements. The contract may state which days are specifically included such as Christmas Day and New Years. Of course the Christmas Day 2022 is not an official bank holiday, neither is New Year’s Day 2023 as they both fall on a Sunday.

Employers may need to decide what policies they implement and communicate with their employees and workers.
