Loading Links with Ideate BIMLink for Revit

When a link definition has been created in another project and saved to disk as a .link file, it can be then loaded back into a new project following the steps below.

To load a link definition into the current Revit project, template, or family file:

  1. Select the New… button from the main dialog of Ideate BIMLink.
  2. Select the Browse method at the left of the New Link dialog.
  3. Pick the Load… button, as shown above, to specify a folder location where the previously defined linked definition has been save.
  4. Select one or more links from this folder to import them into the current Revit project, template, or family file.

TIP: If you find yourself frequently loading links from the same folder, you may want to add this folder to your library.

You may receive warnings if the Link you are loading conflicts with an existing link.  For more information, see Ideate BIMLink messages.

An easy but useful tip. You can copy sheets, drafting views and schedules from another project, useful when you create generic details that can be used in different projects.

Insert Tab > Insert From File > Insert Views from File

Select the file and then choose the desired sheets / views to import.

HOLD ON, you’re not done

Make sure to clean, purge and audit your file after this. Linetypes can be quite messy. Check this great addin for Line types cleanse: //www.pkhlineworks.ca/

Can you copy sheets and views from one Revit project to another?

While Revit allows inserting Drafting views and schedules from an existing project, it does not have built in options to allow copying/ inserting 3D, Plan, Section and Elevation views between different Revit projects. If only a few views need to be re-used, then consider creating new views in the new project.

Can you have sheets from linked Revit files show up on your Revit model?

While you can include sheets from the linked file in the sheet list you can't print them form the host model. To add the sheets to the sheet list, open the linked file, select the sheet and check "Appears In sheet list" on the Properties Palette.
