It just hasn't risen to the top of the to-do list because we have seen very few bug reports about it, so it seems that not very many people are bothered by it. The new Lens Blur tool in Lightroom adds an aesthetic blur effect to any part of your photo. You can easily apply optical Blur and Bokeh adjustments through an interactive, customizable experience that lets you define the blur amount and refine focus. The AI-powered Lens Blur analyzes a photo through a depth map and creates a natural blur effect that is further customizable.

Lens Blur is currently available as Early access in Lightroom. You can try the feature and share your feedback with the Lightroom team. To share your thoughts and experiences, use the:

Apply Lens Blur in Lightroom desktop

  1. To automatically apply the blur using Adobe Sensei, select Apply. Once the blur is applied, you can refine your selection with the following:
    • Blur Amount slider: Lets you control the strength of the blur effect. The slider is set at 50 by default.
    • Bokeh: Lets you select from any of the following Bokeh options:
      • Circle: Modern circular lens
      • Bubble: Standard circular shape with over-corrected spherical aberration
      • 5-blade: Commonly seen in the vintage lenses
      • Ring: Commonly seen in reflex or mirror lenses, also known as Doughnut
      • Cat's Eye: Typically caused by optical vignetting in certain lenses
    • Boost: Lets you adjust the brightness of out-of-focus light sources in the image.

  2. Use the Focal Range to adjust the range of depth values that are in focus.
    • Subject Focus: Automatically sets the focal range using AI-powered subject detection.
    • Point or Area Focus: Manually set the focal range by clicking or dragging on the photo.
  3. Select Visualize Depth if you want to visualize the depth map and focal range. To manually refine the depth map, select Refine and then adjust the Focus or Blur amount using the Brush size, Feather, and Flow sliders.

    Visual Depth toggle that lets you view the depth map. When you select Visualize Depth, the overlays on the image show the following colors:

    • Warm or Yellow: Covers the area that has a near focal range.
    • Cool or Blue: Covers the area that has a far focal range.
    • White: Covers the area that is currently in focus if you're adjusting the Focal Range controls.
  • If a photo has an existing depth map, Lens Blur will use it, unless you specify otherwise
  • You can press and hold to hide the applied adjustments.
