Tulving and Pearlston (1966)
lab experiment
participants to learn 48 words from 12 different categories.
when the participants were given the categories as cues, recall was 20% higher.
Supports the concept of retrieval failure due to the absence of cues (forgetting happens because the categories (necessary triggers) for recovering memory are not present)
Godwin at al (1969)
volunteers to learn a group of words either sober of drunk, then recall them
either sober or drunk 24hrs later.
People who recalled words in same state as when they learned the list recalled it far more accurately.
Supports state dependent getting (a from of retrieval failure due to the absence of cues)
forgetting a result of absence of physiological cues (alcohol intake) from the time of coding.
Explanations for both of these studies and many more like these provide strong evidence of the concept.
