2023 Kia Sportage review: Our expert's take

Competes with: Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan … did I miss anyone?

Looks like: An even wilder take on the Kia K5 sedan

Powertrains: 187-horsepower (estimated), 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine; eight-speed automatic transmission; front- or all-wheel drive

Hits dealerships: Winter 2022

The celebration of all things crossover continues at Kia with the unveiling of the 2023 Sportage SUV, answering our question: “Now that the compact Seltos has arrived, what’s the point of the Sportage?” It’s hard to call the fifth-generation Sportage a compact SUV given that it’s gone from being one of the smallest vehicles in the class to one of the biggest: The new ‘23 has grown by 7.1 inches in length and 3.4 inches in wheelbase over the outgoing model, making it notably larger than its showroom mate Seltos. It’s also gained some power, some new features, some new style and some new relevance in a showroom packed with SUVs separated by fairly small differences in sticker price.

New Style to Lead the Showroom

The latest Sportage is graced with the new “Opposites United” design philosophy, which Kia says marries futuristic elements (see: the headlights) with more rugged styling bits (see: the off-road-styled X-Line, and new X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trims). It’s even wilder looking than the K5 sedan and is decidedly distinctive, with the traditional Kia “tiger nose” grille flanked by “boomerang” daytime running lights. Strong character lines sweep down the body side and culminate in notched taillights.

The X-Line trim, meant to feed the public’s increasing desire for more off-road looks on their car-based crossovers, brings items like unique front and rear bumpers with satin chrome, gloss-black side mirrors, a roof rack and window surrounds, raised roof rack rails and unique 19-inch wheels. If you actually want to go a bit further off-road, the new X-Pro trims bring 17-inch matte-black wheels with BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, LED foglights, optional LED headlights, heated windshield and wiper washer nozzles, an available two-tone roof and new multiterrain drive modes. It’s a bolder look for the Sportage than the current version, which itself has been likened to more amorphous models like the Porsche Macan and Ford Escape.

A New Platform for More Space

The new ‘23 Sportage is also decidedly larger than the model it replaces inside and out, as the new one is now built off of Kia’s N3 platform, the same as the still-larger Sorento. The additional length mentioned above combines with a half-inch taller and wider body to help generate the biggest backseat legroom in the class of 41.3 inches and the most cargo space of 39.6 cubic feet, according to Kia.

Under the hood is a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making a Kia-estimated 187 horsepower (final numbers are not yet available), mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving either the front or all wheels. If you opt for all-wheel drive, you’ll also get a 1.5-inch lift in ground clearance versus the previous-generation Sportage, presumably for more dirt-road ability. The AWD system also uses an electro-hydraulic coupler with an automatic center-locking differential to actively distribute power between the front and rear wheels. Kia says that this is not the only powertrain that will be available in the new Sportage (a hybrid and other variants are coming, it says), but it is the only one it’s ready to reveal today. Despite the increased size of the Sportage and new powertrain combination, Kia says that fuel economy should be improved as well, with the company targeting an 8% improvement.

Tech, Tech and More Tech

The move to the Sorento’s platform has enabled Kia to cram a lot of new style and technology into the Sportage’s interior for 2023. A newly available dual-screen panoramic display combines two 12.3-inch screens (one for the gauge cluster, one touchscreen for the multimedia system) for a high-tech feel, while the asymmetrical console focuses on the driver’s access to buttons and switches. Kia has upped the Sportage’s material quality, too, especially on the more luxurious SX and above trims, and has moved to animal-free faux leather for all but the base LX trim.

The new touchpad integrates climate and audio controls below the multimedia screen, and switching between functions changes what the physical knobs actually do. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all trims, and options now include an available 360-degree camera system with 3D bird’s-eye view, Harman Kardon premium audio, a wireless charging pad, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration, a Wi-Fi hot spot that can connect up to five devices and Kia Connect concierge service.

But it’s the safety tech, including both standard and optional advanced driver-assistance systems, that have really seen an upgrade. Standard on the new Sportage are a driver attention warning, LED headlights with high-beam assist, hands-on lane-centering steering, lane keep assist, and forward collision avoidance with cyclist detection and autonomous emergency braking. Kia engineers have also thrown in a rear occupant alert to remind you not to leave anyone behind, plus a rearview monitor with dynamic parking lines and rear object detection.

If you want to spend a bit more money for more systems, Kia will offer a blind spot monitor with collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic emergency braking, adding oncoming turn collision avoidance to the forward collision avoidance system and forward parking distance sensors. The navigation and cruise control systems get options including automatic adjustment of the set speed to match detected speed limits, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and navigation-based adaptive cruise control features that adjust the Sportage’s speed as it prepares for upcoming curves or changes in speed limits. That’s a lot of gear for a small SUV, but it will certainly be priced accordingly. Expect pricing to be announced closer to its release date.

The new 2023 Kia Sportage will arrive in showrooms sometime in the first quarter of 2022 (think wintertime), and most of its versions will now be built alongside other Kia models at the company’s West Point, Ga., assembly plant.

Bang for your Buck no brainer

September 16, 2022

By Michael C from Marion, IN

Owns this car

I purchased mine after doing some serious comparisons with the Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes GLS 350, Toyota RAV4 and the Subaru Outback. By far for SX Prestige HEV is a no brainer. All these models were nice, however, for the price, technology, being fully loaded and maintenence costs, The 2023 Sportage SX PRESTIGE HEV is the best all around bang for your buck!
