La nuit de l homme review

Scent: A romantic combination of Cardamom, lavender and woods. Overall spicy but balanced with freshness.

Performance: 3 hours with soft projection (slightly improved when over-sprayed and applied on clothing)

Occasions: All year as a dating fragrance

Pros: The scent profile is masterfully blended and will still get you compliments!

Cons: Since a severe reformulation since 2014, the scent is not as ‘rich’ as it once was and performance has been greatly reduced.

La Nuit de L’Homme. The cologne that has started many a fragrance journey, and the fragrance that has started many a fling.

It’s also a fragrance with a cult following, a whole number of noses lined up in a row waiting for a waft to come their way so they can finally feel alive again. It’s addicting, seductive, and sweetly subtle. The perfume version of leaning in close. Of eye contact. Of not letting go.

In my opinion, the best thing about La Nuit de L’Homme is that, yes it smells marvelous, but it doesn’t try to be masculine. It is, in a way, but its power comes from its gender-melding, its powdery sweetness drawing power seemingly from nowhere.

In this La Nuit de L’Homme review, I’ll be giving you my two scents on this beauty, going over everything from what it smells like, to who I think it’s for, to personal impressions, longevity, compliment factor, and more.

Without further ado, let’s sniff.

Personal Impressions

This was among the first ten men’s fragrances I ever tried; that was years and years ago, and, as I write this review, I look over and aha, what do I see? A bottle of La Nuit de L’Homme. Not the same one, mind you.

I’ve tried a lot of men’s colognes.

Yet, I keep coming back to La Nuit de L’Homme, over and over again.

Sometimes, there are scents that simply evoke a certain vibe, give you a certain air that fits with the image of yourself that you’re trying to put forward. La Nuit de L’Homme is charismatic. Plain and simple, in an understated, natural way.

Upon first spray, I can immediately smell cardamom — pretty prominently — and it’s nicely sweet and spicy, and a little bit fresh. I find it to be a very uplifting opening, and I really like the way the cardamom develops and stays well into the wear of the scent.

Pretty soon, the lavender starts to come alive, and this is where I think the scent gets really interesting. The lavender has a soothing sense to it, and counterpoint exuding a subtle, almost feminine (by itself) sensuality. Combined with the cedar, it smells refined, elegant, and deep.

I really like the caraway in the base, which starts to appear around 4 hours after first spray. It smells spicy and warm, and makes the scent feel different than other mainstream men’s colognes. It’s one of the better dry downs I’ve smelled.

All told, I find it very warm, very cozy, and above all, very charming. I’ve found that it’s the kind of scent that gives people a good impression of you. They’re naturally more inclined to like you.

Sort of like if you have naturally warm eyes, or a nice smile.

It’s the same thing, except you can spray it on. Modern innovation. I tell ya.

Another thing worth mentioning is that La Nuit de L’Homme is an absolute compliment magnet. I kid you not — anywhere and anytime, there’s no situation too unexpected. You can be in line at the grocery store, at a party, or at a petting zoo… It doesn’t matter. Though I would be wary of anyone wearing La Nuit de L’Homme to the petting zoo.

Overall I think that La Nuit de L’Homme is a really excellent scent for those who want to smell elegant, charming, sexy, and a little mysterious, without digging too deep in the well of “classic men smells.”

Alright, enough about me; let’s take a closer look at the actual note breakdown of La Nuit de L’Homme.

Scent

La Nuit de L’Homme doesn’t have a ton of notes — not simple, per say, but everything here plays a purpose. Here are the notes that make up La Nuit de L’Homme:

Top Notes:

  • Cardamom

Middle Notes:

  • Lavender
  • Virginia cedar
  • Bergamot

Base Notes:

  • Vetiver
  • Caraway

The opening of La Nuit de L’Homme is pure cardamom — spicy, sweet, and aromatically fresh. It’s really nice, and you don’t find cardamom in a ton of men’s fragrances. The ones you do find it in were (usually) inspired in part by the success of this beauty.

In the middle, lavender, virginia cedar, and bergamot come in. The lavender adds a relaxing sensuality that is also pretty unusual. The virginia cedar adds some sharpness and drives in some masculinity. It’s pretty much a counter to the lavender. Read more about lavender perfumes here.

The bergamot, I find, isn’t so prominent here. It’s more a subtle citrus peel sort of vibe than a fresh squeezed, pulpy citrus.

In the base, you get vetiver and caraway, adding spice and earthiness. It also helps La Nuit de L’Homme lean more masculine.

The spice added by the caraway isn’t the sharp spice of pepper, nor is the the hot spice of cloves or saffron. It’s a sweeter spice than you might be used to.

The opening is dominated by cardamom, but as La Nuit de L’Homme develops it smells sweet, dark, and warm.

I think the strength of this scent is that it isn’t too masculine, and it isn’t in your face at all. It’s understated and plays in fleeting whifs and brushes of the shoulder. It’s one of those lean-in scents; like how you move closer to someone when they’re whispering.

The overall vibe of this scent is very warm, very sexy, and a little dark. It feels like picking up a girl for a date on an autumn evening, or a classic ballroom dancing scene in a 2000s movie.

Overall, La Nuit de L’Homme is one of the best men’s fragrances by pure scent. It smells beautiful, in a dark and deeply alluring way.

Performance

Performance on La Nuit de L’Homme is a little tricky to judge. I’ll start by saying that it isn’t the longest-lasting cologne on the market.

That said, it also isn’t as bad as some people may try and tell you. La Nuit de L’Homme isn’t a scent that projects wildly, throwing out screechy tendrils into the night, hoping to ensnare some drunk passerby 50 feet away in its olfactory grip.

It’s much more of a skin-scent type of fragrance, so if you go into it with that mindset, you won’t be disappointed.

I get around 6-8 hours on skin.

However, the performance on clothes is far better for some reason. I couldn’t tell you why. Regardless, it helps you get more life out of every spray.

Sillage, like I mentioned before, is pretty good. Again, this is more of a skin scent, so the scent bubble is going to lie closer to your body. La Nuit de L’Homme is a more intimate-setting cologne, so this makes sense.

Overall, performance is just OK.

Who Is This Scent Good For?

This scent is for the man who looks in the mirror in the morning, not to check his appearance, but to look into his own eyes and ask himself if everything’s on. Tell himself about his dreams, and how he’s going to accomplish them.

This scent is for the man who closes his eyes when he steps into a snowstorm and breathes in.

This is for the man who plays the piano in a ruffled dress shirt at 2 a.m. when he can’t sleep.

This is for the man who opens up the windows on cold nights and listens to the wind blow.

This scent is for you if you love the fall and winter, cold nights, and sweeter men’s fragrances. You’ll love it if you’re looking for a less masculine men’s scent, or at least, a men’s scent that doesn’t shout it out.

When To Wear It

Cold cloudy days, autumn nights, winter nights, date nights, spring nights, summer nights… A lot of nights. Basically, any time you deem it appropriate to smell warm, cozy, and intimate. Anytime you want to invite someone closer.

Don’t wear it in the heat, the gym, or a pool party. That’s simply not the move, and you’ll regret it. I promise.

You can wear La Nuit de L’Homme casually, but it really shines when worn with a nicer outfit; it doesn’t have to be fancy per say, but nice. Something like a dress shirt or nice sweaters. It also works magnificently in a suit.

Overall, La Nuit de L’Homme is a versatile cologne for colder months; wear it in the heat or sunshine at your own peril and with much disgust.

Similar Men’s Fragrances

If you’re looking for a men’s scent similar to La Nuit de L’Homme, we have a few options for you to choose from:

  • Dolce and Gabbana The One EDP is another men’s scent with cardamom, and is similarly sweet-spicy. Like La Nuit de L’Homme, it works really well as a date night scent. It also smells luxurious and sexy, with clear quality. However, it’s a scent that could perform better.
  • Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille is a warm, spicy scent for men — like La Nuit de L’Homme. However, Tobacco Vanille leans further into vanilla, giving it a creamier, more dessert-like aroma. It’s also far longer lasting. If you’re looking for one of the best cold weather scents in existence, and find yourself cringing at the performance of other perfumes, give Tobacco Vanille a try. Read our Tobacco Vanille review for more deets.
  • Dior Homme Intense is a supremely classy, distinguished perfume for men. Similar to La Nuit de L’Homme, it’s a great perfume to dress up to. Dark and mysterious, pair this with a suit and you’ll look (and feel) pretty much unstoppable. It’s also excellent in romantic settings, operating as a lean-in, cozy up kind of scent. Again, like La Nuit de L’Homm, it isn’t the most masculine — which, depending how you look at it, can be an advantage.
  • Spicebomb by Viktor&Rolf is, well, spicy. Just like La Nuit de L’Homme. Unlike La Nuit de L’Homme, it’s far louder and yet somehow smoother. It’s also a better performer. However, it doesn’t have the same charming allure, and won’t fetch you quite as many compliments. It is a great “out and about scent,” though, and one I highly recommend.
  • The One Elixir by Paco Rabanne is a really unique, really fun men’s perfume. It positively sings in colder weather and, like La Nuit de L’Homme, is sweet and warm. However, The One Elixir is far more youthful; it’s just a plain good time. With notes of vanilla, tonka bean, rose, apple, and patchouli, it’s one of the best winter perfumes for men. Somehow, it’s also pretty under the radar.

Similar Women’s Fragrances

If you’re looking for a women’s scent similar to La Nuit de L’Homme, we have a few options for you to choose from:

  • Tom Ford Black Orchid is a women’s perfume like La Nuit de L’Homme that is similarly warm and deep. It has a darker vibe than La Nuit de L’Homme, but rests in the same airspace. Black Orchid is feminine and damp-earthy, giving it a sort of decay-like quality. The dry down, however, is sweet and has a similar elegance. Unlike La Nuit de L’Homme, Black Orchid is fascinatingly polarizing.
  • Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium is a scent by the same house, and is a refined creamy and alluring feminine perfume. Leaning heavily into vanilla, you also get creamy almond, licorice, and coffee. Like La Nuit de L’Homme, there’s a lovely warmth to the perfume, making it a great get closer scent.
  • YSL Libre is a women’s perfume that smells soft and smooth. Like La Nuit de L’Homme, Libre is warm and inviting. Unlike La Nuit de L’Homme, Libre is very floral, with notes of jasmine, lavender, and orange blossom. I’d recommend Libre if you’re looking for a more floral, musky vanilla scent. Dior Hypnotic Poison is a great female scent similar to La Nuit de L’Homme. It’s heavy, dark, and similarly mysterious, without leaning too far into spice. Hypnotic Poison presents a very realistic, upscale vanilla; it’s not loud, but very elegant. If you’re looking for a darker, mysterious women’s perfume for the cold weather, give Hypnotic Poison a shot.
