Research topics for ob-gyn residents

Residency Research

The OHSU Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is committed to educating residents in medical research both through a formal didactic curriculum and by completing a research project of their own during thefour-yeartraining period. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, each resident is expected to design, execute and present a formal research project of publishable quality. Through their project, residents learn to formulate research hypotheses, develop appropriate study designs, manage research projects, analyze data, and present findings both orally and in writing. Projects range from basic science, public health, policy, education, quality improvement-focused, qualitative research, epidemiology, and clinical research projects. Projects can be based in any of the sub specialties of Ob-Gyn and residents are encouraged to choose projects that align with their clinical interests and career goals. Results are presented at the Annual Resident Research Day during their PGY3 year although the majority of resident projects result in presentations at local and national conferences as well as peer-reviewed publications.

OHSU offers residents a wide range of resources to support residents in their research. Residents participate in a structured research program led by Assistant OBGYN Residency Program Directors ofResearch and Scholarship,Drs. Leo Han and Jamie Lo. The research program curriculum is designed to expose residents to key lectures and topics that will strengthen their ability to conduct research, but also to analyze medical literature, and be able to translate research to evidence-based clinical practice. In addition, residents also have access to statistician and Institutional Review Board (IRB) support. Residents may request department support for project costs or travel funds to national meetings for accepted poster and oral abstracts.

Research Leadership

Jamie Lo, M.D., M.C.R. is a native Oregonian. She received her bachelors degree at the University of California, Berkeley and completed medical school at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), followed by residency training at the University of Utah. She moved back to Portland and for her fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at OHSU in 2012 and stayed on as faculty in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at OHSU and as an Affiliate Scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC).Her research focuses on developing advanced in-vivo methods for antenatal surveillance and studying the impact of environmental perturbations, especially maternal substance use, on prenatal, fetal and placental outcomes

Leo Han, M.D., M.P.H. is from Boulder, Colorado. He completed medical school at Northwestern University, followed by residency training at the University of Colorado. He moved to Portland and OHSU for his fellowship in Family Planning in 2014 and stayed on as faculty in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and as an Affiliate Scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC).His work focuses on improving the lives of women and families through contraception research, family planning clinical care, and training new reproductive health researchers. His research seeks to address the unmet need for novel non-hormonal contraceptive methods.

Research Infrastructure

Center for Womens Health

Founded over a decade ago, theCenter for Womens Health(CWH) combines clinical care, educational programs, and research in womens health. Directed by AaronCaughey, M.D., Ph.D., the CWH was designated a National Center of Excellence in Womens Health in 2003.The mission of the Center for Women's Health at OHSU is to preserve wellness and prevent all types of disease in women of all ages, to empower women to be active, well-informed participants in their health care, and to conduct clinical and basic science research that benefits women.CWH has over 15,000 outpatient visits per year.

Womens Health Research Unit (WHRU)

The research arm of the CWH is theWomens Health Research Unit (WHRU),directed by professor of obstetrics and gynecology Jeffrey Jenson, M.D., M.P.H. The WHRU has managed clinical trials for investigators associated with the OHSU Dept. of OB/GYNfor over 20 years.TheWHRUresearch staff is solely dedicated to researching issues pertaining to womenand individuals that are biological female but identify otherwisein order to improve current clinical practices and enhance the quality of public health both now and for future generations.Previous and ongoing studies range from birth control options to treatment for conditions associated with menopause.

Biostatistics and Data Analysis Support

The Department of Obstetrics andGynecology data analytics group support is provided to residents and fellows at no cost through the OHSU OB/GYN Department. The group provides study design and analysis support to faculty, trainees, and students in the department. This group includes a health services researcher and department faculty member who directly supervises two masters level analysts (epidemiologist and biostatistician). The group provides consultations at all phases of research, from project planning and study design and analysis plans through final analyses and publication-ready results. Residents and fellows have access to consultations with faculty supervisor and analysts to support research design, including refinement of research questions and outcomes, specification of aims and hypotheses, selection of data collection methods, sample size calculations, statistical analysis plan; data extraction from electronic medical records; and data analysis, reporting of the results and abstract and manuscript preparation.

Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute (OCTRI)

OCTRI, a partnership between OHSU and the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research, is funded by the National Center for Research Resources through the Clinical and Translational Science Awards. OCTRI is part of a national network of about 75 centers. The OCTRIprovidesa researchsupportinclude specialized research nurses, research dieticians, biostatisticians, computer hardware and software systems for data management/analysis, and sophisticated laboratories vital for inpatient and outpatient research.

Oregon National Primate Center (ONPRC)

OHSUs west campus houses one of seven national primate research centers in the United States supported by the NIH. There are 60 doctoral-level research scientists on faculty and over 170 fellows, students, and research staff.A number of faculty in the OB/GYN Department have dual appointments also at ONPRC, largely in the Reproductive and Developmental Sciences Division.Within the ONPRC there are four different research divisions:

  • Neuroscience

  • Division ofCardiometabolicHealth

  • Genetics

  • Pathobiology andImmunology

  • Reproductive andDevelopmentalSciences

Research Opportunities

In each of thedepartments subspecialties(Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, GynecologyOncology, Family Planning, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and General Gynecology)we havefaculty engaged in nationally recognized research efforts. These research efforts span clinical trials, basic science and translational science, public health and epidemiology, public policy and health systems.Residentsare paired with mentors that overlap in research and clinical interest.
