When I heard about this film, I misunderstood it completely, thinking it was just a remake of Chow's King of Comedy, and ignored it. Well, that was stupid. I should've known better. Sure it's a thematic remake about putting in the hard work as an extra year after year in the face of adversity until you make it. But it also takes place in a world where Stephen Chow is a famous director, and the extras are such fans of the original King of Comedy that they act out it's famous final scene for fun, even with E Jingwen wearing the outfit that Cecilia Cheung wore. And the perspective has changed. The earlier film was wholly focused on the extra.…

Very funny and heatfelt in a scene by scene basis, but after near two decades operating in a much larger scale I suspect this minor register doesn't fit Chow that well anymore even with Herman Yau around as on set trafic cop to help ground things. Both men have much better films about life at the Chinese film industry margins. Anyway, this is a pretty good mainstream comedy, just only occasionally possessed of Chow's off-beat genius.

    YOU...NEGATIVE...HEART...PEOPLE.

Plz let this get a U.S. release. Chow’s funniest in a long, long while — and pretty strong satire too!

This is a fucking 90-minute long commercial man not even gonna rate it, that's time I'll never get back. Who knew the real April Fool was me all along.

Stephen Chow likes movies. We know this because he’s been in tons, written and directed his own features for about two or more decades now, with often great critical and commercial success. The New King of Comedy is a spiritual sequel to his 1999 flick The King of Comedy though from what I’m told it’s more the premise that’s the same than the content (I haven’t gotten to see the original yet). Remember what I said about Chow liking movies? Well, The New King of Comedy is the story of an extra - Dreamy (E Jingwen) - who longs of being a star. But she’s not vain or greedy she just really really loves acting. The film serves as Chow’s…

Of course the year's best Lunar New Year movie didn't get released in the US. More to come.

Stephen Chow’s great humanist work. Still one of the best of 2019 it’s just so heartfelt, funny, moving, and inspiring.

Maybe after the end of the universe. Everything is always just so true, performance departs from experience, reality is the same as the imaginary, just refracted by a shift of focus. Acting is remembering. Life is but a dream.

The Passion of the Actress (E Jingwen), the path from extra to stardom as a Via Crucis full of blunders, mishaps and humiliations of all sorts. Yet, there is little to no bitterness to Stephen Chow's film. On the contrary, The New King of Comedy comes across as cinematic playful and imaginative as (for example) Chow's The Mermaid.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. I didn't expect to like this film so much. It's a crowd-pleaser story of how hardwork would eventually pay off. And the tune of Danny Chan's 1983 song "Storm 疾風" goes perfectly with the film, esp "如內心有夢 便全力追蹤" (if you have a dream/ then chase it wholeheartedly". It shows us that although Stephen Chow doesn't film in Cantonese anymore because he wants to recruit new talents in the industry and because of funding issues, he's still essentially a Hong Konger, making films in Mandarin with his Hong Kong heart. I give you some examples - there're plenty of sarcasms in the film, from mainlanders' obsession with plastic surgery, selfie, to skin-deep beauty. And you seldom find a mainland Chinese film…

[7] Note to self: when the world of cinema is letting you down, just see a Stephen Chow movie. For one thing, even when the plot is silly, even preposterous, Chow's films are just so well directed. He is that rarest of creatures, a maker of comedies who actually attends to the basics of cinema. The clearest example of this is Chow's preference for composing establishing shots on the diagonal, like some bastard child of Jerry Lewis and Giorgio de Chirico. But this is really just a subset of Chow's entire approach, which is to organize his scenes as fields of action, a dispensation of people and things that looks simple but is actually quite purposeful. This is no doubt…

I was in a bit of grumpy mood when the film started and by the end, I wasn't, so that's a good thing right.

A nice mixture of drama and comedy, I have no doubt you will have a smile on your face by the time the end credits role.

Should I watch The King of Comedy?

This is must see viewing for not only all Scorsese or De Niro fans, but anyone who appreciates unusual or difficult movies. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Robert DeNiro wants to be "The King of Comedy" in this 1982 film directed by Martin Scorcese and also starring Jerry Lewis and Sandra Bernhard.

Was the ending of King of Comedy real?

Film scholar David Bordwell, writing in Film Viewer's Guide, mentioned the (un)reality of the ending as a topic for debate, as there is no definitive answer as to whether the ending is reality or fantasy. By the end of the film the line between fantasy and reality is blurred for the audience as well as the character.

Is King of Comedy Rated R?

Is The King of Comedy Based on a true story?

No, The King of Comedy is not based on a true story. It is a fictional narrative.
