After unveiling the new Mustang earlier this month, Ford is about to take the wraps off an entirely different vehicle developed for work rather than play. The 2023 Super Duty lineup is debuting on KenTRUCKy Day, which is a real thing proclaimed by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. The event is organized to take place at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, where the F-250/F-350 will break cover later today to fight Chevy's 2024 Silverado HD. Although there have been a few teasers in the build-up to today's premiere, Ford has been awfully quiet about the new Super Duty. One of the clips shared on social media did show a side logo with a red "6.7L" next to "Power Stroke" lettering, thus revealing diesel power is here to stay. As a side note, Chevy updated the 6.6-liter Duramax and it now makes 470 hp (346 kW) and a colossal 975 lb-ft (1,322 Nm) of torque. Ford Super Duty Spy PhotosOn the gasoline side, a recent report indicated the 2023 Super Duty will receive a newly developed naturally aspirated 6.8-liter V8 to replace the aging 6.2-liter V8 nicknamed "Boss." The mid-cycle refresh is unlikely to introduce a hybrid option for the workhorse, so the big truck is believed to solider on with ICE-only powertrains. Spy shots have revealed the Blue Oval is once again preparing an extensive array of trim levels as we've seen prototypes of the XL and XLT as well as the fancier King Ranch and Platinum. All are expected to share a redesigned front akin to the smaller F-150's fascia. There should be some significant changes on the inside where sources close to Dearborn have indicated a large display, potentially measuring 12 inches on the higher-end trims. It’s the first time they’re available with a 5G wireless connection that helps the infotainment system perform quicker, and it accepts over-the-air updates and allows up to 10 devices to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot. Plus, Ford makes its mightiest trucks available with its 2.0-kW onboard generator (a.k.a. ProPower Onboard). The Super Duty can also be equipped with a head-up display for the first time, and there are new driver-assist features, too. The list includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality as well as lane-centering assist. The addition of front and rear emergency braking helps prevent the giant pickups from colliding with objects at low speeds. When it comes to towing, the Ford Super Duty is not only prepared for pulling massive loads, but now it boasts high-tech assists that make jobs easier. The introduction of onboard scales gives users an estimated cargo weight to make sure they don’t exceed the truck’s payload. The feature also helps guide people on how to evenly distribute the trailer's tongue weight. Along with a blind-spot monitor for fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing, the Super Duty is now available with a 360-degree camera system specifically designed for trailers. Another cool new feature is navigation that shows routes that best accommodate a trailer’s specific dimensions and weight to help the driver avoid headaches. Anyone who has backed up with the tailgate down has undoubtedly bemoaned the fact that the traditional backup camera becomes useless. Ford addresses that by adding a camera in the top of the tailgate. This, along with the integrated parking sensors, is intended to make the act of backing up with the tailgate down easier than ever. Ford hasn't yet released pricing for the 2023 Super Duty lineup. The production date is set for January 2023 in Kentucky and February 2023 in Ohio, but this could change due to current supply chain issues.
