Am I a Joke To You refers to a reaction image of a stern-looking man with the caption "am I a joke to you?" The clip comes from the second season, episode 32, and years after it's meme popularity was tracked down and re-uploaded in it's proper resolution.

Origin

The earliest known usage of the image was posted by Twitter user @sizwesabo in response to a Tweet about soccer (shown below). The screenshot may contain a still of the character Mziwoxolo 'Tau' Mogale (played by actor Rapulana Seiphemo) from an episode of the South African soap opera Generations the Legacy.

Spread

Two days later, on January 25th, Twitter user @simphiwe_chef. They captioned the tweet, "Jimmy Tau to Sizakele Manonga after she dumps him for Bandile (Major League).. with Lobola fully paid.. by Tau.." The post, which refers the breakup of professional soccer player Jimmy Tau and then-fiancé Sizakele Manonga, received more than 80 retweets and 40 likes in less than three years (shown below, left).

On October 15th, 2018, Redditor twakle14 posted the image with the caption "me: *opens incognito tab for the 5th time within 1 hour my pp:" The post received more than 9,900 points (98% upvoted) in four days (shown below, center).

On October 16th, Redditor twakie14 used the image with the caption "god: *creates humans* humans: *creates more gods* god:" The post received more than 37,000 points (94% upvoted) and 250 comments in three days (shown below, right).

Thio Upload

On January 12th, 2023, a YouTube channel named Thio uploaded the original video clip from the source: the original South African television station. According to the description accompanying the video, Thio tracked down the original show all the way to the channel, and then paid them $400 to send him a copy of everything they had so he could find the clip. The new upload of the source material gained over 47,000 views in one year (shown below).

Origin

The first time this reaction image was used dates back the 23rd of January, 2016 when it was posted by a twitter user @sizwesabo as a response to a tweet by @Orlandopirates which was about the score of a football match. Basically, the screenshot contains an image of a popular character known as Mziwoxolo ‘Tau’ Mogale which was played by actor Rapulana Seiphemo. The still image was gotten from an episode of the South African soap opera Generations the Legacy.

Meaning

This meme is one perfect way to react to someone or a situation that makes you feel like you are not important. That’s why someone else captioned the tweet “Jimmy Tau to Sizakele Manonga which was right after she dumped him for Bandile”

How far did it go?

When this meme was posted in January, it got a lot of rewets, some people also sampled it with @Simphiwe being the first to do that. He (@Simphiwe) was actually referring to the breakup of a soccer professional player Jimmy Tau and his then fiancé Sizakele Manonga. On the 15th of October, 2018, A Redditor user twakle14 posted the image and he captioned it “me: opens an incognito tab for the 5th time within 1 hour, my PP:”
