Margot Robbie has revealed the big question her close friends had upon leaving the cinema after watching Barbie - why on earth did she turn down the opportunity to kiss Ryan Gosling?

Robbie and Gosling star alongside each other as the famous fictional doll couple Barbie and Ken who are “girlfriend and boyfriend”.

When they learned there was no on-screen kiss between the pair - with Gosling considered one of the world’s biggest heartthrobs - Robbie said her friends remarked, “What’s wrong with you?”

Robbie, who both plays Barbie and is a producer of the film, revealed that, even to her, it did not “feel like a win” that there was no kiss, she told People.

“All of my girlfriends were like, ‘Well you did a whole movie with him and you don’t kiss? What’s wrong with you? I thought you were kind of in charge on this one!’” Robbie said.

“I was like, ‘I know, I can’t check that one off (my list)’.”

Meanwhile, Gosling told the publication “it was so funny trying to figure out what their idea of kissing might be”.

“I’m so glad all of that got cut out.”

The actors explained they tried to replicate how children who imitate their Barbie dolls kiss, but ultimately none of it worked.

Instead, they went from a moment where Gosling’s Ken leaned in for a kiss as Barbie just stared ahead blankly.

Gosling also exposed the one rule Robbie had on set, a mandated dress code - encouraging the cast and crew to wear pink once a week.

“Margot had this pink day once a week, where everyone had to wear something pink. And if you didn’t, you were fined,” Gosling told the publication.

He shared that Robbie “would go around collecting the fines, and she would donate it to a charity”.

“What was really special was just how excited the male crew members were,” he said of the rule to wear pink.

“At the end of the film, they all got together and, with their own money, made pink crew shirts with rainbow fringe.”

Gosling previously revealed another effort Robbie went to in order to help inspire him to tap into what he has referred to as his “Ken-ergy”.

Speaking with Vogue in May, Gosling said Robbie left him “a pink present with a pink bow, from Barbie to Ken, every day while we were filming. They were all beach related.”

Some of the gifts were puka shell jewellery items, or a sign reading “Pray for surf”, which Gosling said is “Because Ken’s job is just ‘beach’.”

“I’ve never quite figured out what that means,” he said.

“But I felt like she was trying to help Ken understand through these gifts that she was giving.”

In the interview with People, Robbie also gushed about the Ken star, calling him “the most comedically gifted actor I have ever worked with”.

She laughed that she “ruined” most of his takes because she was laughing the entire way through.

The Gerwig-directed movie stars Robbie as the iconic Mattel toy, along with Gosling, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell and America Ferrera.
