Any love for the NIKON 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR AF-S Lens?

Any love for the NIKON 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR AF-S Lens? The venerable FX kit lens. Seems like a nice all around zoom lens. Any real world experience here?

It's not thatvenerable - it was launched in 2012...

I quite like mine, and am happy to use it rather than the 24-120mm f/4 VR Nikkor or 24-70mm f/2.8 VC G2 Tamron lenses, when I want a lightweight option with decent range. AF is quite snappy, VR works well and sharpness and contrast are pretty good.

If shown an image taken at f/5.6-f/8 in the 24-70mm range, I think most people would generally be unable to tell which of the three was used.

It's pretty good. Some corners have been cut slightly, bit of distortion on the wide end, and a bit of CA, but nothing that's a deal breaker by any means. I looks kit-lensish and a little flimsy, but the moment you pick it up, you realize it's actually quite substantial. Thom Hogan seems to prefer it over the 24-120/4 these days.

It's a great walk around and lens. I wanted to buy the Nikon 24-70 and compared it on several occasions and could not see a difference in image quality when viewed on my PC.

The only advantage I could see in in the 24-70 was the F2.8 aperture, but with VR on the 24-85 I've been very happy.

I found the 24-70 too heavy to use as a walk around or travel lens.

My comparisons were only done using my PC, I didn't compare printed images.

I have the current VR version, and am very happy with how it performs on my D610.

As others have said, it has some barrel distortion at its widest end and pincushion at the long end. Both are slight in my opinion, and easily corrected in Photoshop. The lens also suffers from chromatic abberation, but not any worse than I've seen in other lenses.

My 24-85 was the only lens I took on a 14 day cruise my wife and I took last year to celebrate our anniversary, and it did not let me down anywhere. I have several 16X20 prints from that trip hanging in our home now, plus a 12X36 pano format shot of a Manhattan sunrise that is a single shot cropped from the full frame. The lens does good work.

A greatly reduced resolution copy, handheld from the balcony of our room onboard the cruise ship.

I'd characterize the lens as solid but not inspiring. It gets the job done, it's weaknesses are well documented so it is not likely to trip one up in the field. If you do your job, it doesn't get in the way much. I don't hesitate to grab it when I want the flexibility of a zoom for shorter focal lengths.

I find it a hugely useful lens for when I want a lighter and more compact kit and will generally be shooting in good light (eg. vacation to somewhere sunny). It's substantially smaller than the 24-120 or 28-300, and I find the compactness worth the limitation in FL range for my needs. I always take a 50mm f1.4 also, it's so small and light I've vowed never to not take one (I have a 50mm f1.8d also, which is the smallest AF lens in FX I think, just in case I am tempted not to take a fast prime).

It really negates the need for a smaller MILC "for travel" for me.

The 24-70 f2.8 is the least used of my bigger lenses as a result.

I bought it right when it came out and always had VR issues with it in the 1/80th-1/250th range. After sending it to Nikon 3 times over the years they finally replaced the VR and then I sold it as refurbished. The lens felt cheap, the distortion high and the sharpness not very uniform with a harsh look.

When I got the D500 and 16-80, I felt it was a better light weight package then the D750 and 24-85 combo producing images with a much nicer look and offering more range. (I do however often correct for distortion and vignetting)

I am still waiting for the ideal Nikon FX 24-85/105 F4 to go on my D750 as an option along with my 24-70G. We desperately need such a lens with good construction, af and optics.

I love mine. It's so compact for an FX lens, and yet it gets the job done. It's significantly smaller and lighter than the similarly reviewed 24-120, without giving up a whole lot of range on the long end. I won't ever part with mine.

It's great on the 24MP sensors, but the flaws will start to show if you put in on the 36MP and up sensors.

And that is good argument for 24mp ff sensor! Good enough for Leica, good enough for me. Printed a 2x1.5 metre poster from a D750 with 24 70 g last week. Just fine.

I have used mine on a 36mp sensor with little issue. I just compose to allow for a little cropping. I sold off a 24-70 2.8G to get mine, there really isn't much difference in most cases, other then DOF at 2.8 vs VR,

That is just repeated forum site myth.

I have a D700 a D610 and a D810. The 24-85 works just as well on the D810 (36Mp) as the others.

It is noteable that you do not list a 24Mp Full frame camera or a 24-85 lense !.

I also bought this lens when it first appeared - it is very sharp at sensible apertures and distances and is my lens of choice at weddings (I have shot over 700 over the years starting with blads).

Wide open and shortest focal length will be less impressive but that is just its natural limits - probably best to stop down and use a higher ISO equivalent.

To be honest - I doubt anyone could tell the difference between shots from this and from a much more expensive lens in normal shooting.

...og! and you won't go home with an aching back like you will from the 24-70 so that's a bonus if you are going to do another wedding the next day!

In my opinion the Nikon 24-85 VR comes into its own when used with the Nikon Z6. It is well balanced on the FTZ adapter and body and I have gotten some outstanding results with it. I have used this lens on my D700 body before purchasing the Z6 and also used it on a D800 for several shoots with excellent results. No problems with the Z6 as any distortion is corrected in camera with JPGs and NEFs. Yes the lens has some distortion as has been documented but it completely corrected in the Z6/7 and easily corrected in Lightroom or Photoshop if used with a camera that doesn't offer in camera correction. All in all a very good lens.

I'm sure that's that's true, but having really liked the 24-85 on F-mount bodies, with my Z6 the native Z 24-70 f4 is so compact, such good value in a Z bundle and so uncompromising on quality, I sold my 24-85VR. Yes it would be nice to have the 85 long end instead of 70, but not nice enough to overcome the Z24-70 f4 advantages

I use the AF-S 24-85 VR on my Z7 with nice results. I have a large stable of F mount lenses which I don't want to replace, therefore the FTZ (II) is "glued" to my Z7 which serves as a mirrorless F mount camera, and the (most likely better) Z 24-70/4 is not an option for now.

The AF-S 24-85 VR is not spectacular in any respect, but there is also not any real let-down in my experience. Stopped down a little bit, the center resolution does the Z7 sensor full justice. The borders are weaker but still ok. Some decentering or field tilt issues were observable in both exemplars which I tested before buying, but within acceptable range (for me) for a lens of this class.

Regarding bokeh I have this example image from today (shot wide open at 85 mm):

The original post is from 2018 but I still feel compelled to respond...

I bought this lens to use in combination with the AF-S 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G as a two-lens walk-around kit. I am very pleased with both lenses. While the 18-35 has a reputation as being a great performer for the money, I feel the same about the 24-85.

I did a casual comparison of it to the primes I have in its range: a 24mm f/1.8G, 35mm f/1.8G, 50mm f/1.4G and 85mm f/1.8D. I was very impressed with the results and gained some extra confidence in the zoom.

On a FF camera, 85mm is alittle on the short side of being a usable portrait lens... although it will do in a pinch. I'm a bigger fan of the 24-120 Nanocoat ED-VR... alittle faster... alittle better telephoto range... resulting a alittle better subject isolation.
