  When organizations miss their plan and fall short of their strategic objectives, they may look at their people as the source of the problem or issue. That their inability to hit their goals was responsible. They make think that's the barrier, but, in all likelihood, it's not the people. Individuals and teams inevitably fail at accomplishing an organization's objectives because they haven't been shown, in writing with clarity, what needs to be done to accomplish them. They may have been verbally told what to do and shown a plan, but when it's time to go to work and take action, if that message isn't written out clearly, it can get lost; efforts stall out, busy work ensues, and nothing gets accomplished. Lacking a dedicated plan or framework for implementing a strategy, one that would empower people to use their authority and influence to accomplish key initiatives, is what’s missing from the formula for strategic success. Having no framework means that; 1) people have no goals, or 2) the goals they do have are meaningless to what the organization is trying to achieve. It's time that we fully consider managing execution as a separate and necessary discipline from strategy. Not to dismiss the importance of having a strategy but to emphasize how best to make it happen. There has to be a framework to align both individual and team goals with the strategic objectives of the organization, providing a road map at every level for what needs to be done. Describing who needs to be responsible for it, and when they need to accomplish it. If leadership is to effectively change the behaviors that drive successful strategy today, it will require implementing this. A framework that's easy to use and understand, communicates clearly, is repeatable, and distributes authority and influence to those who can be counted upon to deliver results. A framework that effectively utilizes goal setting as an organizational "bias for action." Are goals helping to drive your strategy and accomplish your organization’s strategic objectives, or are they a separate exercise used to check the box on performance management and to which minimal attention is paid? You hired the right people to help you succeed.
