It's not the fastest, slimmest, or least expensive option out there, but it has the chops to keep you productive through the d... Time is money. Dell's new Latitude E5450 that is designed to make work efficient and be performance-enhancing has now been introduced to the business world. Will the professional domain benefit from its mobility, security, and power?  For the original German review, see here. What qualities characterize a business laptop? "Secure, swift, and elegant" describe Dell's device precisely. Security is divided in software and hardware units. The former is implemented via Dell Data Protection (DDP), and the latter with a Kensington lock, fingerprint scanner, and Smartcard reader. An Intel Core i5-4310U, 8 GB of working memory, and a 128 GB SSD provide Dell's laptop with the performance. Taken together, the buyer gets a mid-range business laptop for approximately 1150 Euros (~$1423). We let Dell's device compete with a few rivals to establish the success or failure of the new Latitude line. Toshiba's Tecra Z40T-A1410 steps in with identical components and a steep price of 1350 Euros (~$1671). We also add the HP EliteBook 840 G1-H5G28ET in this comparison round. HP's laptop is available in many versions, and we opted for the maximum configuration for 1650 Euros (~$2042). The extra 500 Euros (~$619) brings an Intel Core i7-4600U, 8 GB of working memory, and a 180 GB SSD. To legitimize the price difference between the two, the product line also offers more basic configurations for a price starting at 1000 Euros (~$1238). The hardware components in the 650-Euro (~$804) cheaper entry-level model are identical with the tested HP EliteBook 850 G1, and thus we will use it for comparison in the performance benchmarks. The 850 version includes an Intel Core i5-4200U, an 8 GB working memory, and a 500 GB magnetic hard drive. Lenovo's T lineup has always been invariable in the upper business category. Lenovo's ThinkPad T440s is a remarkable contender for putting our review sample in a balanced relation. Buyers can call an Intel Core i7-4600U and a 250 GB storage device their own for around 1800 Euros (~$2228). All parts of the plastic casing have been assembled neatly, and thus the plain Dell device makes an elegant impression. The display back of our review sample features a magnesium alloy. Instead of being content with rubber nubs, the screen is completely encircled by a rubber rim. The color of the metal hinges adds contrast, and they make a robust impression. The subjective feel is very pleasant owing to the subtle curves. Maintenance and repair are possible via the removable base unit. Unfortunately, it is also the only way to replace the battery and needs time. The material-related drawbacks have to be expected in terms of stability. However, the plastic casing cannot be dented anywhere. Overall, the casing makes a decent and business-suitable impression. An unsightly drawback is that dust settles between the display's bezel and the screen, which then has to be removed with care. The rear can harbor permanently connected peripherals, such as a screen. The SD-card slot and one of the three USB ports for connecting temporary devices are found in the rear area of the right. Interfaces in the front areas usually limit the work space due to interfering cables. The strategy that Dell uses for interface positioning can be called well-conceived. Communication Intel's Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 is responsible for wireless connections in the Latitude. Its everyday throughput rate was ascertained in a test specified by the author. Dell's Latitude E5450 had to compete against a MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013). The test was performed one story below the router. The reception performance of Dell's device was approx. 40% and that of the MacBook roughly 70%. Moving to the same story as the router evened out this difference. Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth 4.0 are also installed in the review sample. A Qualcomm Gobi 4G LTE module is also available for Internet on-the-go. A SIM-card slot is under the base unit. The 720p webcam convinces with a smooth representation and a sufficiently good color reproduction. Unfortunately, image noise is quite evident. Security Security features are seen as a substantial necessity particularly in a business device. Dell's Latitude E5450 offers a TPM chip, fingerprint scanner and a Smartcard reader among other security tools in the DDP (Dell Data Protection). The latter can be expanded with further services optionally. A contact-less Smartcard reader (NFC), an FIPS certified HC, Dell's ControlVault, and Computrace are also available as expansions. A more in-depth explanation of the listed security standards can be found in our FAQ. Accessories Dell includes an 8 GB recovery stick in addition to brochures. Plenty of accessories are warmly recommended to the customer. Dell's E-Port Replicator, which is available in two versions, has a special importance for the work area. The lower-priced model is sold for a steep 180 Euros (~$222). The difference of the 30-Euro (~$37) more expensive alternative is the interface diversity. Details can be found on the product page (simple port replicator, advanced port replicator). Furthermore, it is possible to add various input devices, bags, and screens to the order. The Portable Power Companion is listed as an additional, remarkable accessory. Though it is not yet listed in the details, it can be found via the search box on the website. The laptop can be recharged on-the-go with 4-cells and 12000 mAh. Maintenance Only six screws have to be removed to open the entire base unit, making almost all maintenance work possible. Even the fan can be cleaned easily. One of the two working memory banks is filled. However, the review sample does not allow replacing the battery quickly; a few more screws have to be removed after opening the base unit. Warranty Dell only includes a one-year warranty without a surcharge. Besides this standard warranty, additional services can be added to the order. Among them, a one-year accidental damage warranty (26 Euros, ~$32)) that can be combined with theft protection (41.60 Euros, ~$51). Other support services can be extended by up to five years. Keyboard High-quality input devices are a must for a work device like the Latitude. The black chiclet keyboard in Dell's laptop has a long drop and quiet typing noise. The keys feature a pleasant firmness and good pressure points. Touch-typing artists can easily go on a creative rampage with this keyboard. The review sample's keyboard convinces with its two-level backlight. Touchpad and TrackPoint The TrackPad's size of 10 x 5.5 cm is agreeably big. Finger gestures are implemented directly and without delay. The input device responds impeccably even in problem zones, such as the corners. We particularly liked the smooth and direct multi-touch gestures like scrolling through websites. The integrated buttons have a soft pressure point and long drop, which makes working the well-designed mouse replacement enjoyable. As a second cursor unit, the TrackPoint additionally allows mouse inputs. The movements are also pleasant here. Three dedicated TrackPoint buttons are located above the TrackPad. They implement a left and right click, and one button is for scrolling. The Latitude line has been treated to a matte, Full HD screen. The IPS screen comes from AU Optronics and has an average brightness of 270.8 cd/m². A touchscreen with Gorilla Glass is alternatively available. However, its exact price is not yet known. An unpleasant feature of the installed screen is the existing screen bleeding. White spots are very visible on black backgrounds. The brightness of Dell's laptop is still on par with its rivals. It extends its lead with a contrast of 1001:1. The comparison models achieve 320:1 (Lenovo T440s) and 406:1 (HP EliteBook 840 G1). AdobeRGB is covered by 60.4% and the sRGB space is 81.2%. The analysis using CalMAN reveals any shifts in colors and the grayscale. The grayscale fares quite well with a dE rate of 3.97. Rates of 2.79 are even possible after calibration. The shift in ColorChecker ex-factory is 3.81, which dropped to 3.21 after calibration. These rates are far beyond the standards of TN screens and the competition. The IPS screen in Lenovo's ThinkPad could first display a better shift after calibration. A business device has to be ready for work at all times. That means that using it in the field, for example in a train or a car, should be possible. The version with the matte screen does not thwart any such intentions. Nevertheless, direct sunlight should be avoided. The viewing-angle stability of the installed screen is awesome. Only minor losses in contrast and an acceptable deterioration of colors and brightness occur when tilted or looking from the side. The 180-degree hinge allows use on the lap. "Time is money" summarizes the aphorism of the business world concisely. Booting times must be kept short to live up to that. An 8 GB working memory and a 128 GB SSD are to ensure this here. An energy-efficient Intel Core i5-4310U creates the compromise between power and mobility. Thus, Dell's laptop is not only qualified for the office and multimedia sectors but can also be used for sophisticated applications. System information: Dell Latitude 14 E5450 Intel's Core i5-4310U is installed in the laptop, which is to ensure a balance between mobility and performance. Both cores clock with 2 GHz and can achieve up to 3.0 GHz via Turbo mode. Intel specifies the maximum power consumption with 15 watts. All rivals are also based on ULV CPUs in order to ensure a longer battery life. We ascertained surprising results in Cinebench R15. Although Lenovo's ThinkPad T440s is equipped with an Intel Core i7-4600U, it achieved a roughly 12% lower score with 235 points than Dell's device. The tide turned in single-core operation. Turbo mode settled to 2700 MHz during the test. The user will not have to count with performance losses when there is no power socket at hand. The Latitude achieved identical scores in Cinebench. Solely the more expensive T440s achieved a much higher score. The other contenders lag behind the Latitude E5450 by a good 20%. A 256 GB SSD is optionally available in other countries. Our review sample sports a Liteon IT LCS-128L9S. Buyers who opt for a competing laptop from Toshiba or HP will have to accept a considerably slower magnetic hard drive at least in the cheaper configurations. The ThinkPad T440s qualifies as a direct rival here. The analysis with the AS SSD benchmark shows that Dell's laptop is considerably better particularly in the write rates. The relevant 4K rates also outperform Lenovo's device. The processor graphics card clocks with up to 1100 MHz and provides enough application performance. All comparison devices feature the same Intel graphics card. Differences become evident in the selected clock rates and CPUs. 3DMark 11 shows that the review sample outruns Lenovo's T440s by 4%. No compromises have to be made in battery mode. However, casual gamers can definitely indulge in some games. Intel's HD Graphics 4400 allows a smooth rendering of some older and newer games using minimum quality settings. We looked at two games from last year as representatives. Tomb Raider and BioShock could both be displayed with enough frames per second when the graphics were reduced to minimum. Beyond that, the review sample achieved more fps than Toshiba's Tecra Z40T and HP's EliteBook 850 G1. Neither idle nor load operations generate a noisy or unpleasant level. The passive cooling is sufficient in idle mode. When higher load is demanded, the device's noise level climbs to 33 dB(A). These rates are far below those of the load rates of its rivals. The review sample only rarely reached peaks of up to 36.2 dB(A). The surface temperatures never got unpleasant when idling. However, the load temperature development is decisive. Here, it will soon become obvious that the heat distribution has not been solved ideally. The review sample's upper left area got noticeably warm with up to 44 °C. The other areas only reached temperatures below 30 °C. Typing or use on the lap did not prove unpleasant. However, Lenovo's solution is better conceived. The hot spot during load was a pleasing 36 °C. The CPU only clocked with 1.1 GHz after an hour of full load via Prime95 and FurMark. We did not ascertain thermal throttling though. The user will not have to fear performance losses after stress. (±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 41.5 °C / 107 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F (+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.6 °C / 82 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F. (+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 26.8 °C / 80.2 F and are therefore cool to the touch. (±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.8 °C / 82 F (+1 °C / 1.8 F). The installed system speakers are standard for modern day laptops. The volume is adequate. The sound spectrum covers the upper frequency range so that they particularly lack bass. The available equipment is sufficient for system sounds and occasional Internet videos. Power Consumption The review sample is happy with rates ranging from 4.5 to 9.6 watts when idling. Lenovo's ThinkPad T440s is even more frugal. It consumes more during load, and up to 33 watts is drained from the power supply. Corresponding to the chosen hardware, it places itself between HP's EliteBook 850 G1 and the ThinkPad. However, the 840 model of the EliteBook line is below the review sample with 31 watts despite stronger hardware. The 65-watt power supply will not have problems with the maximum power consumption. The battery life is another substantial criterion for a business laptop. The review sample's manufacturer installs a 51 Wh battery that is recharged by 80% after one hour. The Latitude 5450 shut down after 13 hours and 14 minutes using minimum brightness and disabled communication modules. Toshiba's Tecra Z40T only achieves a shorter runtime of approximately 10 hours. HP's EliteBook 840 G1 is roughly on par with the review sample. A significant scenario is simulated in Wi-Fi browsing with a brightness of approximately 150 cd/m². However, more than 6 hours and 23 minutes was not possible on battery power, and thus Dell's laptop will not last a whole workday unless there are longer read periods or breaks. HP's and Toshiba's devices have an even shorter runtime. Since Lenovo offers an optional 72 Wh battery, it achieves the longest runtime with 12 hours and 30 minutes. Unfortunately, this battery option is not available for our review sample. However, a longer battery runtime would be possible with the available 4-cell Dell Power Companion. The advantage of this solution is that the laptop's maximum height is not increased unpleasantly. The load test is performed using Battery Eater. The maximum brightness and high-performance profile are the test settings. Like the contenders, Dell's laptop shuts down after approximately 2 hours. Booting is still possible on reserve when the battery is almost drained and the laptop shuts down. Some options are made available then. After a warning, the user can return to the operating system or diagnostic options can be executed. The keyboard is characterized by an even and decent drop. We ascertained the same in the mouse replacement that can rightly be called that. Simple and multi-touch gestures are implemented smoothly and immediately. Although the review sample can be placed in the mid-range business category, an IPS screen is installed that achieves good rates in contrast and brightness. In terms of performance, Dell's laptop stood up to its rivals and proved to be a strong opponent. The Latitude was also solid in the emissions rates. Like the Lenovo ThinkPad T440s, the temperature curve could be better though. Unfortunately, the battery life is not enough for a whole workday. Although Dell does not offer a bigger battery, there is an external solution that is not exactly cheap with almost 160 Euros (~$198). The Latitude E5450 laptop is recommendable for business routine.
