Is Hotel Del Luna and goblin the same?

Goblin (also known as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God) is quite possibly one of the greatest K-Dramas around. It originally aired between 2016 and 2017 and has a total of sixteen episodes and despite its deceptively short run, this K-Drama can typically be found on any "best K-Drama" list online and has incredibly high ratings.

Goblin is a fantasy romance story with just so much more to it than just that and is often rated a 10 out of 10 by most fans. There are a few other K-Dramas that rank next to Goblin and a few that would be a great watch for any fan of the series. Here are five reasons why Goblin is one of the best K-Dramas and five alternatives for every fan to see.

BETTER ALTERNATIVE: A Korean Odyssey (2017-2018)

A Korean Odyssey is not only similar in theme to Goblin, but it is also one of the best K-Dramas made. This drama is all about the supernatural and deals with a young woman, Jin Seon-mi, who can see ghosts, demons, and everything in between. Son Oh-gong is a disgraced Monkey King who's seeking to return in Heaven's good graces and become immortal once again. The only way to do this is by doing good on Earth and eating Jin Seon-mi's flesh, though, and he's developed feelings for her. Son Oh-gong then decides to protect her from others who also want immortality while wrestling with his own desires.

Audiences will meet a number of gods and creatures throughout this story and will absolutely fall in love with the romance between the two leading characters.

GOBLIN IS THE BEST: The Interesting Mythology

Goblin has an incredible mythology system. Many supernatural K-Dramas feature their own types of mythology and approaches to the supernatural. For example, A Korean Odyssey is based on the gods and supernatural creatures from the Chinese classic story Journey To The West. Because Goblin also falls under the supernatural category, it has a deep lore for its own take on actual mythology.

The leading character, Kim Shin, lives with the Grim Reaper and over the course of the series, audiences will meet a number of different characters from various gods and goddesses to other reapers.

BETTER ALTERNATIVE: Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (2017)

Three characters staring at each other in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (sometimes known as Strong Girl Bong Soon) is an extremely fun watch and on the list of being one of the highest-rated K-Dramas along with Goblin. Here, the titular Do Bong Soon is born with super-strength and is hired to become the bodyguard of a CEO in charge of a gaming company after he sees her defend herself from a bunch of unruly guys. A comical love triangle forms between Do Bong Soon, the policeman she has a crush on, and her boss who develops feelings for her.

Like Goblin, this K-Drama has nearly every genre in it, with elements from mystery, thriller, comedy, romance, and an air of the supernatural mixed into one great show. Bong Soon is incredibly heartfelt and has one of the cutest romances in any K-Drama.

GOBLIN IS THE BEST: It Has A Bit Of Every Genre

Goblin has a bit of every genre it seems. Romance, supernatural/horror, thriller, comedy, fantasy, you name it. Many K-Dramas have one main genre and then one or two sub-genres (such as romance and then comedy) at best, but Goblin seems to perfectly manage all of the genres under the sun to make this perfectly knitted show with amazing elements from each.

While some dramas do this as well such as the aforementioned action-packed romantic-comedy Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, it is a pretty rare thing to do successfully and Goblin manages to capture each genre perfectly.

BETTER ALTERNATIVE: Hotel Del Luna (2019)

Hotel del Luna Man Wool Chan Sung

Hotel del Luna is a relatively newer K-Drama that quickly made strides within the community, becoming another of the highest-rated dramas. This K-Drama is deeply rooted in the supernatural as well, making it a good binge for Goblin fans. Hotel del Luna is about a supernatural hotel and the employees who linger between the afterlife in order to help the wandering souls (i.e. their guests) find their way on.

This K-Drama features a lot of horror elements, romance, and mystery, as the main characters try to uncover their past and connections so that they themselves can move on.

GOBLIN IS THE BEST: It's Not The Typical Two-Couple K-Drama

Many K-Dramas have two essential romances to the plot. Romance A, which is the romance between the leading two characters, and Romance B, which can be a number of things. Most of the time, Romance B creates a love triangle situation between the main characters to add (usually unnecessary) drama to the plot.

Goblin, however, features two perfect relationships that don't really conflict with one another, as they only build on the overall story and each other in the best ways possible.

BETTER ALTERNATIVE: W (2016)

W is a great story for fans of Goblin. The story is slightly supernatural/sci-fi in terms of plot due to the fact that it is about two different realities. One of the worlds is set in a viral webtoon, while the other is the world audiences will recognize as their own.

The author of the webtoon's daughter ends up getting caught up in the world of the webtoon W, a top selling murder-mystery hit in South Korea, and saves the life of the main character. The two characters from the two different worlds end up slowly falling in love, stopping at nothing to protect one another in the comic world of W.

GOBLIN IS THE BEST: The Onscreen Relationships Are Great

The three main characters from the show Goblin.

For a romantic K-Drama, Goblin isn't only about the romantic relationships, which are done amazingly, but also the friendships created along the way. This show heavily focuses on the fact that these characters have seemingly been interwoven by fate with one another. They knew each other in their past lives and have become each others' destinies.

The friendships between Goblin and the Grim Reaper are incredibly wholesome and the bond between Eun Tak and Sunny adds importance to the  of friendship, which is a relationship that's not often covered in K-Dramas.

BETTER ALTERNATIVE: Reply 1988 (2015-2016)

Reply 1988 K-Drama Friends

Though Reply 1988 isn't quite like Goblin in terms of theme, it is another K-Drama that continuously makes it onto the lists of being one of "The Best K-Dramas." According to Nielsen Ratings, Goblin is ranked in the fifth spot for being one of the highest-rated K-Drama, with an 18.68% and Reply 1988 ranks one spot above Goblin, sitting comfortably in the fourth spot with an 18.80%.

Reply 1988 is another K-Drama that is incredibly unique in its own way. It follows a number of truly endearing characters through the simplicities and struggles of their lives. This drama, like Goblin, will make fans absolutely adore each character and will leave any viewer feeling like they are saying goodbye to a close friend when they finish the series.

GOBLIN IS THE BEST: The Amazing Cinematography

Guardian Goblin The Lonely And Great God K-Drama

Over the years, K-Dramas have been getting better and better with their cinematography. They have begun to add in-depth visual effects and have incredibly realistic and pretty shots that split new K-Dramas away from the old and more visually static norms of old.

In nearly all of the reviews about this series, fans just couldn't not mention the amazing cinematography that seems to rival films on the big screen and manages to totally pull audiences into the series.
