Official Twitter accounts for Apple Music and the NFL then confirmed Rihanna's performance Sunday. "It's on," read a tweet from Apple Music. Following the announcement, Jay-Z said Sunday in a news release that Rihanna is "a generational talent, a woman of humble beginnings who has surpassed expectations at every turn." The rapper added: "A person born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the most prominent artists ever. Self-made in business and entertainment." Seth Dudowsky, NFL Head of Music, said in a statement he was “thrilled to welcome Rihanna to the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show stage.” "Rihanna is a once in a generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career. We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance,” Dudowsky added. The upcoming Super Bowl will feature the first halftime show sponsored by Apple Music; previous shows since 2013 were sponsored by Pepsi (which also first sponsored the 2007 show). Variety's Jem Aswad, who cited "three sources close to the situation," reported Friday that Swift would star in the Super Bowl halftime show. However, a conflicting report by TMZ Sports that cited "sources with direct knowledge" noted Swift will not perform in Glendale, Arizona. People confirmed TMZ Sports' report. According to TMZ, Swift was asked to perform at the halftime show and ultimately declined. The report states Swift is waiting to perform at the Super Bowl until she finishes re-recording her first six albums following a well-publicized dispute with Scooter Braun regarding her master recordings. To date, she has released Red (Taylor's Version) and Fearless (Taylor's Version). The NFL announced at midnight Friday that it had signed a multiyear deal to partner with Apple Music for the halftime show. The league had ended an agreement with Pepsi in May. The timing of the announcement resulted in Swift's fans speculating that she would headline the halftime show. Swift, like many artists, is known for dropping albums at midnight. She released two surprise albums at midnight during the COVID-19 pandemic, and she will release a new album, Midnights, on Oct. 21. In addition, Swift has never performed in the Super Bowl halftime show. Aswad reported Swift's contract with Coca-Cola barred her from participating in the Pepsi-sponsored event. The situation seems to be very much up in the air. If Swift does headline the show, she will be one of the biggest female stars to do so, joining Diana Ross, Shania Twain, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and more.
