Getting Started in For Honor

These tips will help you choose a faction in For Honor and learn a bit about what to do first in the multiplayer, such as choosing a hero to play.

advertisement

How to Pick Your Faction

Picking a faction in For Honor only impacts things outside of the battlefield. You can still play with any class of hero you desire, even if you didn’t pick the faction they are part of. When you choose a faction, the stats from every game you participate in will impact the Faction War online, which is tracked periodically across all platforms. Just choose a faction together with your friends!

The faction you choose will also affect the shape your personal emblem will be. Vikings have circular emblems, Samurai have rectangular emblems, and Knights have shield-shaped emblems. Though your faction determines your emblem shape, it does not affect the designs you can choose from to decorate it.

How to Participate in the War of the Factions

After every multiplayer match, activity by both players and bots get counted toward the combined total of the Faction’s activities, with War Assets awarded based on individual performance during the game. These War Assets can be used to help influence the Faction War map online and take over territory on the world map.

The goal is to completely dominate the map by placing War Assets on the map for your faction. You can gain extra gear and other rewards by belonging to the winning faction at the end of a round. The Faction with the most War Assets at the end of the Beta will be crowned the winner. Levels will exhibit visual changes based on which faction is currently dominating the map.

You Don't Have to Recruit Heroes

In the Customization screen, it misleadingly appears as though you must Recruit heroes in order to play them. You don't have to. You can test out any hero you'd like when you play. Recruiting them simply gives you the ability to customize them and equip them with gear.

Play the Best Hero For You

advertisement

Each class of hero favors a unique style over another, which can lead to many different situations on the battlefield. You don’t want to rush down multiple enemies when playing a hero that favors close, single-target combat, or hold a point with a hero that only benefits from killing enemy heroes.

Cater to your play style and choose the hero that best works for you. You can get an idea at what each hero is best at by looking at their feats and passive abilities. For example, the Knight’s Peacekeeper gains Renown faster by killing enemy players. Based on this, it’s pretty safe to assume the Peacekeeper excels at picking off enemies. The Viking’s Warlord on the other hand gains Renown faster by holding Zones and reviving fallen teammates.

You can try out different heroes by choosing How To Play, which gives you a variety of options. Not only are there detailed videos, but there are single player modes that allow you to practice without fear of letting any teammates down. You can practice one-on-one combat by dueling AIs and practice on a never-ending battlefield in Freeplay mode.

Stick With One Hero at First

For Honor’s combat is easy to learn in theory but difficult to master. Mastering one-on-one combat can be even more difficult if you’re switching between classes every match without even looking at that hero’s specific skills and moves.

There is a lot to learn, and if this is your first time playing, juggling classes and new-found knowledge can be a difficult task. Read up on a class, and as the previous tip suggests, pick one you vibe with and then stick with it for a while. Learn the different active and passive abilities of your selected hero. Some abilities are better suited for one game mode, while others won’t be.

No Really, Learn That Hero

advertisement

Each class has a different moveset a la fighting games, with a different number of combos that can be done by hitting the Light and Heavy attack buttons in different combinations. Heroes have different combat abilities as well. Some have abilities no other class has, or a stance that entirely changes the way they battle.

This can open up the use of unblockable attacks, infinite swipes, and much more. Really learn your hero’s strengths and weaknesses in order to optimize your play.

Complete Advanced Practice

General Combat Tips

Use these tips to excel in combat, while in Duel or Dominion mode.

Don’t Button Mash

Hitting buttons wildly will leave you open to attack and massive damage. It will also waste your stamina and cause you to move slow. For Honor isn’t a hack & slash game that you’ll jump into easily. You need to hit buttons at the right time when needed and have options open to you, otherwise you’ll be getting killed very fast and very often.

Take your time when approaching any situation and always plan out your next move, don’t ever rush into anything. Button mashing is also a sure way quickly deplete stamina.

advertisement

Keep an Eye on Your Stamina

Your stamina is represented by the green bar below your health. Without stamina, you can’t use any of your attacks. Each attack you do to an enemy takes away from the stamina bar, which recovers after a short time. The best way to recover stamina is to retreat for a bit.

advertisement

If you waste the whole stamina bar, then you’ll go into exhaustion and need to recover the stamina bar fully before you can successfully attack like normal again. When stamina runs out, the screen will start to become pale, signaling you to retreat and recover. When in this state, you will be more prone to damage and your attacks will be much slower than usual.

Why to Parry in For Honor

advertisement

When you parry successfully, you have a better window to counterattack and deal massive damage on an enemy. Some classes specialize in parrying attacks when on the offensive, but you can benefit from having a good eye for parrying no matter which class you choose.

Parries can be done in any direction when you’re guarding against an opponent, but it can also leave you wide open if your parry misses. You’ll then be hit as if you weren’t blocking at all.

How to Parry in For Honor

To perform a parry, you must be blocking in the direction of the incoming attack and then press R2 right when the opponent’s red attack icon flashes. You'll see sparks when your parry is successful. Some heroes, such as the Viking's Warlord, can parry with a Light attack instead, which is easier to land and leaves your opponent with a shorter opening if you fail.

Be Wary of Your Environment

advertisement

If there is a pit or cliff nearby, chances are you can fall in it. Pushing an enemy off the side leads to an instant kill where they can’t be revived. You can do this easily by activating your Guard Break with Square (PS4) or X (XboxOne) and pressing the same button again to push or throw. Some heroes have throws that can be incredibly effective for tossing someone over the edge of a cliff for an easy kill.

Ladders Can be Your Friend...or Not

Following someone up a ladder can be risky business. On one hand, if you catch up with them and attack, you can knock them off. On the other hand, they can slide down the ladder by holding Circle (PS4) / B (Xbox) and down, knocking you off the ladder instead. If you've already been damaged, falling off a ladder will probably result in death.

advertisement

A good way to use ladders to your advantage is to look for when players begin climbing and then quickly attack them from the ground. Most of the time, you will score a free hit and at times knock them off the ladder. In some cases, this can cause them to panic and start moving around wildly, fall to the ground where you can continue attacking them, or even fall into a nearby pit.

Guard Breaking Against Walls

No matter what game mode you are playing in For Honor, Guard Breaking an enemy against a wall will help you kill them faster. Unlike a regular Guard Break while dueling, knocking an enemy against a wall will cause them to fall to the ground sometimes. When this happens, you can deliver heavy damage while they struggle to get back up.

Depending on your chosen hero, you can sometimes land around two attacks before the enemy recovers and blocks again. With Warlords and Berserkers, this is a strategy that is very effective in almost every scenario. In 2v2 and 1v1 Duels, you can score most kills within enclosed areas because of this. In open areas however, this can still be done against pillars, trees, or giant rocks for the same effect.

How to Counter Guard Breaks Against Walls

advertisement

If you find yourself getting pushed against a wall constantly, try to roll away and retreat instead of blocking or counterattacking. This is a difficult situation to recover from and can lead to a quick death since you are knocked to the ground most of the time when thrown against a wall.

Running away is the best course of action, so you can regain your ground and recover health if possible. Don't panic, but don't fail to act when your guard is broken against a wall. If you don't take immediate action when knocked against the wall, you will be killed quickly.

Reviving Your Allies Is Important

advertisement

In all modes that have you in a group with other players online, its important to revive them should they fall in battle. This can be a real game changer in Elimination, Brawls, and even Dominion Style matches. You can be heavily outnumbered for the majority of a match and still win if you're able to revive your fallen allies.

When in combat with other players, if you find yourself out numbered early on, try to retreat and regroup with your allies. Continuing to fight when you're in a bad position will most times lead to a quick defeat. If you're playing as an Assassin class hero, you'll have enough mobility to quickly get away from a bad situation and flee from combat.

This gives you a good opportunity to revive any teammates that may have fallen, but weren't executed. You can usually travel to and revive other teammates fast as a non-vanguard hero. Do this quickly enough, and you may just give your team a good enough edge to make a phenomenal comeback victory.

For Honor Dominion Mode Tips

These tips will help you specifically with For Honor's Zone-capture focused multiplayer mode.

In General, Don’t be Afraid to Retreat

advertisement

Sometimes, you’re just outclassed, regardless if you’ve just run out of stamina or not. You’re no use to your allies when you’re dead. Retreat if your opponent has back up or if you can’t hold your own and find a place to heal up. Pressing X twice will allow you to disengage from a battle. Regrouping with your allies is always a smart choice, since they can help you out when needed.

Gang Up on Opponents

It’s always much easier to take down an opponent when you have an ally helping you. If you see someone on your team in a duel, run over and help them out if you can. Both of you will have an easier time overcoming enemies when their attention is split.

advertisement

Double teaming on an enemy online will cause them to have trouble guessing where to block or parry when multiple attacks are hitting them from multiple angles. The same works for when you are facing two enemies, you will have a much harder time defending against multiple attacks from multiple enemies.

Don’t Run Around Aimlessly

advertisement

Doing nothing to help the team is just as bad, if not worse, than getting killed quickly. When you respawn during Dominion battles, try to run to the nearest capture point to either defend or capture for your team. In 2v2 Duels, always be mindful where your ally is located and run to assist them if needed.

The point is to not only be active during the battle, but also mindful of what is important at the moment. Constantly running on the map or not fighting is a bad idea and WILL cost your team the match if you aren’t careful.

Pay Attention to Your Hero’s Dominion Strengths

Some abilities on a hero are better suited for Dominion battles than they are for Duels. Depending on your hero, you can power up your NPC allies or do significant damage to the opposing team, but you can’t do so without equipping the right abilities before the start of a match.

When you enter a game and select your hero, take the time to pick and choose the right abilities for the occasion. At the start when you first recruit a hero, you won’t have many abilities open, but as you continue to play, you’ll gain access to better abilities across all game modes.

Defend Zones

advertisement

This is very important during For Honor Dominion matches, and could be the difference between victory or defeat. When you notice you’re losing a Capture Zone in Dominion Battles, try your best to run over and Defend the Zone. Entering a Capture Zone while it’s being taken over will immediately contest the area and prevent the other team from scoring.

If you kill all the enemies on the Zone, you’ll retain it. Even if you aren’t successful, every moment keeps the Zone from falling to the other team and gives your allies time to respawn and move towards the area.

Sit in Captured Zones

advertisement

Captured Zones in For Honor’s Dominion mode award one point per second that passes. But if a player is currently at the captured Zone, it awards two per second. If the enemy team has two captured Zones, but don’t remain in the area, you can gain the same amount of points just by remaining in your team’s captured Zone.

Perform Executions to Prevent Revives

Performing an execution on a downed player will prevent them from being revived by a teammate in all game modes. Doing this will help out with keeping control of key points, as well as give you the advantage in 2v2 and 1v1 duels. Executions also enact an extra respawn penalty on your opponent, giving your team even more time to turn the tides of battle.

But be Wary When You Perform Executions

Executions aren’t always the best choice when confronting multiple enemies. You can still be attacked and killed in the middle of an execution you perform, so you need to choose wisely in scenarios where you’ll encounter multiple enemies at once.

When you kill an enemy player in combat, you can just hit the attack button again to kill them without doing an execution--a much faster animation, allowing you to defend yourself. The player you killed can still be revived, but avoiding death yourself is more important,

Recover Health at Zones A and C Dominion

advertisement

When playing Dominion in For Honor, you can recover health at the Zone A and C. Zone B however, you will not be able to recover health, but you can kill enemy soldiers that lurk in the area (which will allow you to recover health if you have the specific ability to recover health with each NPC kill).

Kill Enemy Minions

advertisement

It’s easy to ignore these nearly non-threats, but every point in For Honor’s Dominion mode counts. Make sure to take out your enemy’s minions on the battlefield while on your way to objectives. They only take one hit to kill and can clinch the match in your team’s favor.

advertisement

Not only do these kills give you points, but if you get ambushed by an enemy player, you’ll have an easier time. Some heroes have the ability to regain health by killing enemy minions, so plan accordingly before you enter the match.

Fight in the Sea of Your Own Minions

If you’re being engaged by an enemy player during a Dominion match, run into your minions and force the warrior to fight you there. Minions do little damage, but a crowded onslaught can be quite distracting for your opponent, giving you an advantage when fighting against them. This also forces your enemies out into the open where other players can notice and assist you in combat.

Stand at the Edge of Captured Zones

It can be tempting to stand in the middle of a captured Zone out of sight, but it will be contested as soon as an enemy steps foot inside. This doesn’t sound like a big issue if you can take care of them quickly, but take into consideration that certain captured Zones are the only way for many heroes to heal.

If it’s contested, you lose a sanctuary for injured allies. Fighting on the edge enables you to engage enemies before they step foot in the territory, allowing you to continue earning points while keeping up a healing area.

Equipment, Contracts, and Purchases

Learn about equipment, how to earn currency and what you can purchase in the Beta.

For Honor Beta Champion Status

Champion Status can be purchased for 2000 currency via the Social menu for your profile and has a number of great benefits. Not only are you given a number of exclusive emblems and icons to use in the Beta and official release, but you are also given a 25% experience boost and obtain more salvage from dismantling gear at the end of multiplayer matches. You also give a 10% XP boost to others just by playing with them on a team.

Having Champion Status when you start the game is helpful, but you may want to purchase a few extra heroes before immediately purchasing it from the Social menu. You can easily obtain extra salvage just by playing a few games and completing Contracts to purchase Champion Status.

advertisement

Choose Equipment Wisely

If you know your hero well, you’ll also know your play style and what gives you the most trouble. Feel like you never get to use Revenge? Are you too squishy? Not fast enough? Use this information to choose equipment that will benefit you the most.

There are a ridiculous amounts of stats equipment can alter, so this is a great chance to balance out your weaknesses, or make your strengths even stronger.

Purchasing Gear Packs

You can Scavenge Gear in the Customize menu of the game and obtain new gear for your hero. These award you with different weapons and armor for hero you specifically have chosen. In the For Honor beta, you start off with quite a bit of currency, enough to purchase every hero and two packs of gear. This gear can give you the upper hand in battle against someone with more items, but it will cost you, and is really only worth it if you only use one preferred hero.

Which Gear Pack to Purchase

advertisement

When Scavenging Gear in the menu, you have a choice of four packs to open. The more expensive packs give you a better guarantee for higher leveled gear. The premium pack gives you the best deal for obtaining higher level gear faster, but it costs 500 per pack.

When starting out the game, you want to play more games frequently than buying these packs, since you obtain new gear from completing matches.

Keep Contracts Equipped

advertisement

Contracts are tasks that must be completed during matches. Completing contracts allows you to obtain extra salvage each time you complete their given objectives against both players and AI Bots.

The objectives vary from playing a match-type to killing a certain number of enemies, but equipping and completing them should be a priority all the time. They will give you the extra boost of salvage to purchase new gear for your heroes.

  • When locked onto an enemy, Dodge in the direction of an incoming attack just before impact to deflect the attack.
  • After deflecting an attack, Guard Break your enemy to Knock them down.
  • The Berserker’s Forward Throw deals Stamina Damage to your enemy.
  • After four or more attacks in a Chain, further attacks become uninterruptible and cost less Stamina.
  • Use Feint (cancelling an attack after the animation starts) to avoid a Block and start a new Chain in a different Guard.
  • The Berserker can also cancel basic Attacks with Dodges, allowing you to harass an open opponent with additional moves.
  • To stay in close combat when missing an attack, cancel the recovery into a Zone Attack or a Dodge.
  • Spin Chop (dodging left or right and pressing Light Attack) can start Chains. Follow up a Spin Chop with a Heavy Attack to begin a chain.
  • Slashing Rush (dodging toward an enemy and pressing Heavy Attack) can also start Chains. Follow up a Slashing Rush with a Light Attack to begin a chain.
  • Your Infinite Chain can be followed up by the Bear Mauler Chain (Heavy Attack, Heavy Attack, Heavy Attack.)

Knights Conqueror: Beginner Tips

The Conqueror is the Knights faction’s Heavy character. It’s classified as a Medium difficulty hero with Strong Defense, hard hitting attacks, and a good mix of counter attacks and harassment.

  • When Locked, match the enemy’s guard position to block their attack. Blocking always interrupts enemy attacks and break combo chains.
  • The Conqueror can charge its Heavy Attack for more Damage, by holding Heavy Attack in order to start winding up.
  • The Conqueror has three Attack Chains:
    • Conscript’s Attrition: perform a series of light attacks while changing Guard directions between attack to strike faster and throw your enemy off and start an infinite chain.
    • Final Argument: This adds a heavy attack to the end of your infinite chain by performing a heavy attack after your light attack.
    • Reaper’s Crush: performed with a pair of simple Heavy Attacks.
  • When surrounded by enemies, perform a Zone Attack by pressing the Light Attack and Heavy Attack buttons simultaneously. Hold the Light Attack and Heavy Attack buttons to extend the attack at the cost of draining stamina.

  • Chargeable Heavy Attacks are a signature of the The Conqueror, but doing this drains your stamina over time, and you’ll be unable to charge once you’re out of stamina.
  • The Conqueror’s Heavy Attacks grant Superior Block at the beginning of the attack, similar to a parry, leaving your opponent open to the follow up Heavy Attack.
  • To keep your enemy guessing, start an Infinite Chain with light Attacks from a distance, and surprise them with a Heavy Attack when you’ve closed the distance.
  • Use Full Block Stance to cancel any attacks by holding Down on the Guard Direction in the recovery time after starting any attack, or connecting with any attack.
  • Stamina is consumed when entering Full Block Stance, and for every blocked Attack while in the stance.
  • If a blocked attack depletes your stamina while in Full Block Stance, the stance is broken and you’ll be left unbalanced and vulnerable. You’ll also be unable to enter Full Block Stance again until Stamina regenerates.
  • While in Full Block Stance, press Guard Break to perform a Shield Bash and push enemies back.
  • After a Heavy Attack you can immediately follow up with a Shield Bash by performing a Guard Break. This is excellent for knocking enemies off balance and following up with a surprising LightAttack.
  • When surrounded by enemies, The Conqueror can perform a Zone Attack while in Full Block Stance, buying time for your allies to arrive.
  • In Revenge Mode, you have Infinite Stamina, so your Full Black stance can’t be broken, allowing you to survive while you wait for your allies.
  • The Conqueror can’t Feint attacks, so be careful that your Heavy Attacks aren’t parried. As a feint substitute, The Conqueror can enter Full Block Stance to lure enemies into blockable attacks.
