Honda's Civic Type R has officially gone on sale, and you know what that means: The online configurator for the hottest new hot hatchback is live. You can now go on Honda's website and virtually build the Type R of your dreams. The good news is that
the mightiest Civic's price remains nice—$43,990—and there aren't many ways to inflate that sum outside of a handful of special paint colors and some accessories. Yep, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R comes essentially one way, though we won't complain about the hardware: A 315-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and a
limited-slip front differential join forces with adaptive dampers, 19-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, and a wild rear wing and pumped-out bodywork to put the hurt on, say, a Volkswagen Golf R or Toyota GR Corolla. Other standard equipment includes
dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a digital gauge cluster, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, and that signature Type R blazing-red carpeting and front seats. Options are limited to a few accessories (though not as many as the JDM catalog
offers), such as a roof rack, a carbon-fiber rear wing (for a whopping $2,250!), floor mats, and an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel ($400). Oh, and the paint colors are up to you—there are five, and you can swipe on to see each of them. This extra-cost Sonic Gray Pearl ($395) should be familiar to Civic watchers. It's available
on lesser Civics, including the 200-hp Civic Si sedan, and it looks pretty cool here with all the Type R's blacked-out trim and wheels. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Sonic Gray PearlAs on the Si, which also is festooned with red-colored accents and (less eye-poppingly red seats), Sonic Gray complements the sporty touches well. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Championship WhiteBy far the most iconic Civic Type R paint color, Championship White is probably our favorite option. It, too, is extra-cost ($395), and to us, it's worth every penny. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Championship WhiteType Rs going back generations have worn Championship White the best. It might not be clear from these photos, but in person the color is wonderfully flat—setting off those red and black accents nicely. The hue also catches light just so, showing off the Type R's pumped-out fenders and wider body. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Boost Blue PearlBoost Blue Pearl is another paint color borrowed from the rest of the Civic lineup, where it's limited to Civic hatchbacks. It, too, costs $395 extra and is among the Type R's few truly bright paint options. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Boost Blue PearlThanks to its lighter cast, Boost Blue is nearly as good as Championship White at accentuating the Type R's flared-out bodywork. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Rallye RedIf the Civic Type R's blood-red interior isn't enough for you, Honda lets you double down on red with Rallye Red. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Rallye RedRallye Red is a standard paint color, meaning it's not extra cost, and as you can see, it works pretty well with the R's various red badges front and rear and wheel caps. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Crystal Black PearlThose keen on taking a stealthier approach should consider Crystal Black Pearl, another classic Honda paint color. With its blacked-out wheels, spoilers, and headlights, Crystal Black Civic Type Rs should look mean without standing out too much. 2023 Honda Civic Type R | Crystal Black PearlAs a fun aside, to critics the previous-generation Civic Type R looked best in black, as the color hid that model's wackier elements nicely. In its latest iteration, the Civic Type R—just like its regular-grade Civic siblings—has adopted much more restrained, almost handsome styling, with thin headlights, cleaner flanks, and far fewer of the old model's peacocking vents, slats, and other extroversions. We think the less controversial look should elevate Crystal Black beyond its old masking role.
